When organizing, everything in that cluttered space has to come out to see what is there. Use the floor, tables, couch, etc and spread it all out. For paring down, use the 5 second rule to decide to keep, toss or donate. Remove the toss and donate piles right away.  Sort by like things and use the 2-3 rule for the same item to edit even further.  For example, 2-3 spatchelors, 2-3 winter coats, etc."
